An Overview of the Conditional Perfect (Condicional Composto)

The conditional perfect is used to describe actions that would have happened under certain conditions, but did not occur:

• Já teríamos saído, mas tivemos de esperar pela minha irmã.

• Se tivesse dinheiro suficiente, teria comprado um carro.

Meaning and Use

The conditional perfect expresses:

• unrealized past situations

• hypothetical outcomes

• meanings like “would have”, “could have”, or “should have”

👉 In these cases, the condition was not fulfilled, so the action did not take place.

Use with se ("if" clauses)

Like the present conditional, the conditional perfect is not used directly after se.

Instead:

• se + imperfect subjunctive → se tivesse dinheiro

• main clause (conditional perfect) → teria comprado

Example:

• Teria ido contigo ao cinema se não fosse pelo exame.
